How Contagious are Warts?

The summer brings with it many wonderful things. The smell of a freshly mowed lawn, family barbecues, vacations etc.  Unfortunately it can also bring pesky little critters called warts.  Warts are a virus, and are fairly contagious.

They most commonly affect the foot, and are most easily transmitted on a wet surface.  Keeping sandals on at the pool or gym will go a long way in preventing your summer from being interrupted.

Children seem to be more susceptible then adults. On a positive note, if you are unfortunate enough to run into these little guys we now have specialized lasers to stop them in their tracks.

-Dr. Dan Margolin, DPM of New Jersey Foot and Ankle Center

April is National Foot Health Awareness Month

April is National Foot Health Awareness Month and New Jersey Foot and Ankle Center in Oradell has made a commitment to forward the cause.  With the warmer weather upon us, say good-bye to winter boots and hello to open-toed shoes and flip flops.

New Jersey Foot and Ankle Center has put together a list from their top doctors on how to take caution so you can enjoy the summer pain-free.

Dr. Maryellen Brucato’s advice:
Dr. Maryellen Brucato

  1. Don’t get pedicures.  As a woman, Dr. Brucato understands the feeling of wanting to get pedicures, but due to the high risk of fungus contamination; she strongly suggests doing your toenails.
  2. Foot pain doesn’t usually go away on its own, so make sure to call a specialist for help so you can fully enjoy walking about during the summer months.
  3. Avoid cheap flip flops.  Although the temptation of $0.99 flip flops seems like a good deal, you will end up paying a lot more to fix the damage that it does to your body in the future.
  4. Make sure you place sunscreen on the top of your feet to prevent sunburn when enjoying a day at the beach.

Dr. Daniel Henessey’s advice:
Dr. Dan Hennessy

  1. Make sure you choose a pair of sandals with an arch support.  There are many great brands out there now that are realizing the necessity of a high quality arch support.
  2. Wash and dry between toes to reduce the chance of fungal growth.  We tell our patients to “toe floss” or use a cotton-tip to dry in between the toes.
  3. Avoid walking bare foot on sand.  It is easy to burn bottom of your feet on sand, so we suggest wearing a comfortable sandal on the beach.
  4. Look out for irregular mole growth on your feet.  If you notice a new or changing mole, make sure you get it checked by your podiatrist.

Dr. Daniel Margolin’s advice:
Dr. Dan Margolin

  1. Just because you can move your foot, doesn’t mean it’s not broken.  A 2014 ESPN poll showed that 88 percent of parents have concern about their child’s risk of injury while playing youth sports and as a father, I agree.  If your child hurts their foot while out on the field, please get it checked out as soon as possible because there are certain kinds of fractures your child can still walk with.
  2. Make sure you buy the proper footwear for a specific sport.  Most athletic shoes are designed with the weight displacement in mind to support the foot during motion.

National Doctor's Day

Dr. Maryellen Brucato, DPM, Dr. Daniel Margolin, DPM and Dr. Daniel Hennessy, DPM
Thank you to the best foot and ankle doctors in New Jersey: Dr. Maryellen Brucato, Dr. Daniel Margolin and Dr. Daniel Hennessy!

March 30 is officially recognized as National Doctor’s Day.  It was signed into law in 1990 by President George Bush as a way to recognize physicians, the work that they do and the contributions that they make to society.

According to The National Doctor’s Day Organization, the first observance was held on March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia where Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond decided to set aside a day to honor physicians.  The first observance included acknowledging deceased doctors by sending greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors.  This is where the symbolic red carnation came from to commemorate the holiday.  It has evolved into a day to take a few minutes and thank the healthcare professionals that save lives every day.

New Jersey Foot and Ankle Center on Kinderkamack Road in Oradell celebrated this holiday by commending their team of podiatric physicians, including owner Dr.Daniel Margolin and associates Dr. Maryellen Brucato and Dr. Daniel Hennessy.  All three of the doctors at the center specialize in medical and surgical foot care.  In honor of National Doctor’s Day, they signed into their senior policy that they always deliver what they promise.

New Jersey Foot & Ankle Center Steps Up the Fight Against Illegal Drugs

Dr.Daniel Margolin of New Jersey Foot & Ankle Center in Oradell and Director of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Bergen County Chapter has teamed up with law enforcement to bring real solutions to the on-going drug problem.

On Tuesday, April 7, New Jersey Foot & Ankle Center’s Community Outreach Director Brielle Takacs was a guest speaker at the Fight Marijuana Event.  Other guest speakers included retired NYPD Detective Michael Zotto and President of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, New York Chapter, Dr. Bernard Fialkoff.

These leaders in the community spoke about their dedication to keeping children off drugs through the largest nongovernmental anti-drug education initiative in the world.

According to a 2011 survey by the Office of Adolescent Health, 37 percent of high school students in New Jersey admitted to using marijuana one or more times during their life.  Zotto, who has spent years working with people in recovery, spoke about the relation of marijuana use to the heroin epidemic.

The Foundation’s campaign is unique in the fact that it empowers youth and adults with factual information about drugs so they can make informed decisions and live drug-free.  Young adults do not like to be lectured about what they can or cannot do, therefore, the Foundation provides the facts that empower youth to choose not to take drugs in the first place.

A sergeant who uses the materials daily in his work said: “Everything in the Truth About Drugs curriculum is pure gold. There is no message about drug abuse that is more penetrating than what this program provides—we can’t top it.”

For free drug educational material, visit www.drugfreeworld.org.  If you are interested in a free drug education event, contact the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Bergen County Chapter at 201-261-9445.
